Global Startup Battle (GSB) will return in 2015! As the world celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week, we'll be hosting the biggest battle in startups for the 6th straight year. Follow @StartupBattle and @SW_DC on Twitter for updates!

Event Judges

Nasir Qadree
Head of Education, Village Capital

Village Capital democratizes entrepreneurship. Village Capital serves as a impact investment firm that finds, trains, and invests in entrepreneurs solving global problems.  Nasir is responsible for helping cohorts scale their businesses, connect with mentors and advisers, and gain exposure to investors. Nasir began his career as an Analyst at Goldman Sachs, and later worked as an Associate to State Street Corporation. After his experience in the financial services industry, Nasir served as an Education Pioneer Fellow at the Connecticut State Department of Education, focusing on improving digital learning and infrastructure, as well as creating new strategies to empower teachers and school leaders to improve persistently low-performing schools. Apart from his role at Village Capital, Nasir has also committed to running 51 full marathons in each US state, including DC, in an effort to raise scholarship funding for first generation college students. Nasir holds a Bachelors of Science from Hampton University.

Adam Segal
CEO and Cofounder, Cove

Adam Segal founded and operates DC-based cove, a network of neighborhood productive spaces, where people come to get things done. Adam co-founded cove with his own work style in mind—having worked in both large corporate settings and from his couch in the living room, he never felt he was being productive enough. Since cove’s launch in September 2013, Adam has enjoyed being productive alongside other cove members from all backgrounds in locations popping up throughout metro DC and now Boston. Adam holds a BA from Amherst College, an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management, and an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. While at Harvard, he was a resident of the University's incubator during which he spent time developing the concept for cove.  

Amita Shukla
CEO, VitaMita

Amita Shukla is the founder and CEO of Vitamita, the author of Enduring Edge, a Mentor-in-Residence at Johns Hopkins, and a Governor’s appointee to the board of TEDCO, the state of Maryland's entrepreneurship engine. Previously, she was a principal at New Enterprise Associates, one of the world’s largest venture capital firms, where she invested in cutting-edge healthcare companies for close to nine years. Shukla regularly mentors entrepreneurs, advises companies and organizations, and speaks to audiences of innovators and leaders. She holds a BA in biochemistry from Harvard, an MBA from Stanford, and 10 patents. Learn more at

Sara Capra
Co-Founder, Orate

Sara Capra is co-founder of Orate, an online marketplace where event organizers and public speakers can more easily find one another. A recent graduate of the Startup Factory accelerator program, and the winner of Washington D.C.’s 2014 Startup Weekend, Orate helps event organizers find the perfect speakers for their audiences and their budgets.An entrepreneur and advocate for helping individuals achieve their full potential, Sara previously worked in Global Partnerships at the United Nations Foundation, where she helped develop strategic partnerships for initiatives that support women & girls, global health, US-UN relations, and sustainability. She has volunteered in India and South Africa, helping empower women through job skills training, and in local communities. She has also supported entrepreneurial and professional development groups, such as Startup Weekend Denver, Millennial Week and Girls Health Ed, and served as a career mentor for Streetwise Partners.

Amy Wilson
CoFounder, Just Startup

Amy J. Wilson is a user-centered product manager working at the intersection of communications and technology to solve complex challenges. She delivers innovative solutions that are valuable, usable, fit within a designated market and aligned to accomplishing client’s missions. Tackling problems with a left- (usability/analytic) and right- (design/creative) brain mentality, she has 12 years’ experience building holistic solutions that produce impact with multiple government agencies, private companies, and nonprofit clients. Her blend of communications and technology skills enables her to communicate effectively and empathize with clients, stakeholders, and end users, while also being able to design compelling user interfaces.

Dina Potter
Founder, HR4SMBIZ

Dina is the Founder and Principal of HR4SmBIZ which is a Latina, woman-owned, boutique consultancy firm, providing on-demand, full life-cycle, human resource (HR) solutions, that are customized to meet a start-up or small business budget. Special focus on minority, latino, & women owned businesses. Passionate about making HR hassle free, while guiding & coaching entrepreneurs regarding compliance (federal & state employment laws/practices), as well as common HR workplace issues. 

Jason Chen
Innovation Director at The Kaizen Company

Jason has 14 years of experience leading business planning and consulting engagements to advise entrepreneurs, start-ups, small businesses, and multi-national companies/organizations in both the private and public sector. Regional experience includes the United States, Eastern Europe, Middle East, and former Soviet Union.

Brian Sacash
Customer Success and Data Scientist, Koverse

Brian Sacash is a Washington, DC area business developer and data scientist who works at the intersection of business and technology. With a background in business analytics, Brian's expertise is in helping organizations discover ways to extract value from data. Brian is also experienced in applying lean methodologies within growing and Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Koverse, Brian was part of Booz Allen Hamilton’s Data Science Team and Innovation Consulting Team.

Anna Consani
Anna Consani, Community Manager, Springboard Enterprises

Anna Consani joined the Springboard team after relocating to Washington DC from the San Francisco Bay Area. As Community Manager, Anna incorporates online tools and in-person networking to build strong business collaborations and enhance visibility of Springboard portfolio companies and the women who lead them. She manages Springboard community events including regional alumnae meet-ups, the SXSW Community Dinner, and the Annual Winners' Circle Dinner Gala in New York City. Anna runs the Springboard Dolphin Tank program, an opportunity for entrepreneurs to pitch their company in less than 5 minutes and receive immediate feedback from an expert panel as well as connections from a live audience. She was also lead on Springboard’s involvement in Sprockit, an initiative by the National Association of Broadcasters to highlight the top 30 emerging media startups. Prior to Springboard, Anna worked for Members of Congress in both Washington, DC and in California district offices. She holds a B.A in Political Science/International Affairs and minor in Sociology from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.

Francisco Martin-Rayo
CEO/Founder, Hear Your News

Francisco Martin-Rayo is the CEO and Founder of Hear Your News, a mobile news platform that lets you listen to your favorite news articles in a wide range of voices.  Think Pandora for news.  He also runs the Winning the Minds Foundation, which provides university scholarships to Pakistani refugees.  He holds a B.Sc. and B.A. from Penn and an M.P.P. from the Harvard Kennedy School.  

Gal Alon
CEO, Founder,

Gal is the Founder of Insights.US, which offers a decision-making tool to help executives get advice directly from their stakeholders. 60% of all decisions made after using the tool were fundamentally different than before. Insights.US found the way to send stakeholder a precise feedback regarding their personal impact on decisions.Gal received his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics at the age of 29 and was picked by Forbes as one of Israel's most promising young entrepreneurs. He also served at the Israeli Prime Minister's Office and changed the way government agencies plan, collaborate and deliver change.

Mack Kolarich
Cofounder, Startup Angels

Mack is the Cofounder and VP of Product at Startup Angels. Their core product is an online marketplace where people can find and invest in venture capital funds. They also produce a variety of investor educational content and produce angel workshops in cities around the world. Mack is also a cofounder of SceneSquid, a SaaS marketing tool for the events industry.

Previously, he was a partner at Startup Jackpot, an active organizer of Startup Weekends out of Washington, DC, and a corporate innovation consultant.
