Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

Corvallis, Benton County, and the surrounding Mid-Willamette Valley is prime startup country
This region is where startups thrive!  From creative enterprises, to software startups, to technology spin-offs from OSU, Hewlett-Packard, and other research centers, the Mid-Willamette Valley has a strong entrepreneurial community.  Resources abound for helping Corvallis startups grow and thrive.

Marti Staprans Barlow

Marti is the founder and Prsident of HospitalityVision, which provides the nations' first cross-platform virtual concierge hotel phone application available on iTunes, Google Play and as a mobile web version. ConciergeToGo provides hotels with a personalized virtual concierge to showcase hotel amenities, make dinner reservations, check meeting times, book a room, call a taxi, send an e-postcard, and even play free 3-D games.

Marc is a well-respected Wall Street financial expert, technologist, business turnaround specialist and real estate investment guru.  He has managed organizations with over 100 staff, 100s of indirect staff members, and $12 million annual budgets and is now the co-director of the SBDC.

Mark Lieberman (PC)
Chief Startup Officer at OSU Advantage

Mark Lieberman is Chief Startup Officer at OSU and Co-Director of the OSU Advantage Accelerator. Previously, he served as Executive Director of the Business Technology Center of Los Angeles County (BTC), one of the largest technology incubators in the United States. Mark is a founder of Los Angeles County Technology Week, a prestigious series of events celebrating and promoting innovation and disruptive entrepreneurship in Los Angeles County. 

Violetta Gerasymenko (PC)
Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, OSU College of Business

Violetta teaches Entrepreneurship at the OSU College of Business.  Her research focuses in part on business model change processes and implications for entrepreneurial ventures. Prior to joining academia, Violetta worked as an analyst in one of the major venture capital firms in Paris, France.  She is regularly invited to be part of start-up competition juries and is a passionate coach of entrepreneurial ventures.  In her classes she teaches use of the Business Model Canvas.

John Turner
Co-director at OSU Advantage Accelerator

John has more than 30 years of professional experience in developing novel technologies and successfully moving them to market.  As Co-Director of the OSU Advantage Accelerator, he collaborates with the OSU Office of Commercialization and Corporate Development to engage with students, faculty, and community mentors in moving innovative concepts to market.  As a member of the OSU College of Business Faculty, he has focused on Technology Commercialization and has assisted in the development of business plans for more than fifty technologies.  After completing his PhD in Physics at UC San Diego he worked for Hewlett-Packard in a variety of technical and management roles, including as a research scientist at HP Labs in new product development and strategic supplier management.  John has also assisted in the launch of numerous startup companies, serving as a consultant on technology roadmap development, intellectual property management and new product development.  He is well versed in the Business Model Canvas.  

Sanjai Tripathi
Startup Zealot

Sanjai is the CFO of Bauer Labs and the founder of Exposure Monitoring Solutions.  He also works as a general management consultant for startups and small businesses. 

Gloria Sica
President, Fulcrum Drive

Gloria is a management accountant, entrepreneurial strategist, and facilitator with over 25 years experience in working with startups and small business in a variety of fields.  She helps founders and teams make informed decisions that improve business value.  In the past she has held a variety of executive positions in startups ro small/medium businesses, including Business Development for ImTech Inc and general manager for CADD Advantage. She teaches the StreetWise Steps to Small Business Growth curriculum to CEOs in the Portland area.

Dan Whitaker
Southern Willamette Valley Regional Catalyst Manager at Oregon Entrepreneurs Network

Dan is an experienced executive with start-ups and early stage companies. His experience includes financing, mergers and acquisitions, marketing and business strategy. He has been involved in raising many rounds of angel, VC, and major debt financing. He was involved in an IPO at Rogue Wave Software.  With many years of experience as an entrepreneur, his administrative skills in setting up process and managing people have led to successful companies that make money.  He is passionate about helping companies succeed, grow, make money and have fun!  He is active with the Oregon Entrepreneur Network (OEN), the Willamette Angel Conference, and the Willamette Innovators Network (WiN).  Dan is the Lead Mentor for the OSU Advantage Accelerator, and is well skilled in customer development and helping teams use the Business Model Canvas.

Thomas Roth
Consultant, Global Sales, Marketing and Business Development

Thomas managed the OEM sales of peripheral products and marketing for Fujitsu Limited in central Europe, serving in a principal role for growth from an initial team of 4 persons to a subsidiary with $250 million annual revenues in 15 years. He also directed the international business development for several startup companies in Europe and the U.S.

Tom Brookes

Mr. Brookes is an attorney with Evashevski, Elliott, Cihak & Hediger, P.C. in Corvallis,  His practice includes business law.  Previously he was general counsel and then vice president of Rogue Wave Software, Inc. of Corvallis, which grew into a multi national corporation and went public in 1996.  Mr. Brookes also was the Executive Vice President of Timberhill Corporation.

John Sechrest
Founder, Seattle Angel Conference, Global Facilitator Startup Weekends

John Sechrest is Founder of the Seattle Angel Conference, Co-Organizer of the Lean Startup Seattle & Global Facilitator for Startup Weekend.

As an entrepreneurial collaborator, he focuses on entrepreneurial and innovation efforts as a way to develop new projects and companies. His efforts are focused building the tools , skills and processes that enable people to make a positive impact on the world.

All of the changes we are seeing in the world will find lasting and sustainable solutions by entrepreneurs and innovators creating new pathways to solving complex issues. By connecting resources, people and projects together and building feedback mechanisms into the conversation, he makes significant impacts on the groups that he works with.

He is currently working on the Seattle Angel Conference - and the Lean Startup Seattle - and of course regularly volunteers to facilitate Startup weekends such as Kirkland Maker's Edition 2014.
